The Cinematic Lighting Glossary for AI Video Prompts: 20 Terms That Set the Mood

Light is half the mood. The same street corner at golden hour is a romance; under one sodium-vapor streetlight it’s a thriller. Yet most prompts stop at “cinematic lighting” and hope the model guesses the emotion. This is the sister piece to our camera-move glossary — same format: a lookup table of terms you can lift straight into a prompt. Name the light first, and your shots stop looking randomly generated.

Light First, Camera Second

Before you write “slow push-in,” decide how the scene is lit. Lighting sets emotion, directs the eye and tells the viewer the time of day — the camera only frames what the light decided. Prompt in that order: subject, action, light, then lens.

[Shot type] of [subject + texture], [action beats], [environment + time of day],
[camera move], [lighting term + direction + color temperature], [style/grade], [mood].

Three rules for lighting prompts:

  1. Name the source and the direction, not just adjectives. “Golden hour backlight rimming her hair” beats “beautiful lighting” every time. A source, a direction (back / side / top / under) and a color temperature — that’s a complete lighting instruction.
  2. One key light per shot. Fill, rim and practicals are supporting cast. Two competing key lights flatten faces and muddle shadows.
  3. Lock the color temperature. Warm (candle, tungsten, golden hour) or cool (moonlight, neon, blue hour), plus one accent at most. Three color temperatures in one prompt is how skin turns green and shadows turn mud.

10 Copy-Paste Lighting Prompts

1. Golden hour

Medium shot of a woman in a linen dress walking through a wheat field at golden
hour, warm backlight rimming her hair and shoulders, long soft shadows across the
stalks, slow tracking shot from the side, shallow depth of field, dreamy romantic
mood, gentle wind and distant crickets audio.

2. Blue hour

Wide shot of a rain-slick city rooftop at blue hour, deep cool blue sky behind a
glowing skyline, a lone figure in a yellow raincoat looking out, slow push-in,
wet concrete reflecting the lights, bittersweet cinematic mood, soft rain and
distant traffic audio.

3. Volumetric god rays

Wide shot inside a misty pine forest at early morning, volumetric god rays cutting
through the canopy and fog, dust and pollen drifting in the beams, a deer stepping
into a shaft of light, slow dolly forward, sacred quiet mood, birdsong and hushed
wind audio.

4. Neon practicals

Medium shot in a rainy Tokyo alley at night, neon practicals — pink and cyan sign
glow — reflecting on wet asphalt, a chef wiping down a counter under a warm noodle-
shop sign, slow lateral track, shallow depth of field, moody urban night mood,
rain and sizzling wok audio.

5. Candlelight

Close-up of a monk copying a manuscript by candlelight in a stone cell, warm
flickering glow on parchment and gold ink, deep shadows behind him, slow push-in,
a single candle as the only light source, contemplative mood, quill scratching and
soft flame audio.

6. Single key light noir

Noir medium close-up: a detective in a fedora lit by one hard key light from the
left, half his face in total darkness, cigarette smoke curling through the beam,
static shot with a slow zoom in, black-and-white high-contrast grade, tense silence
with a distant saxophone.

7. Rim light

Studio portrait of a boxer between rounds, hard rim light from behind outlining
the sweat on his shoulders and steam rising off him, dark background, slow orbit
right, cool teal fill light, gritty determined mood, heavy breathing and towel
snaps audio.

8. Silhouette

Silhouette wide shot: a dancer stretching on a cliff edge against a burning orange
sunset, only her outline visible, sky blazing behind her, slow circular camera
drift, minimal detail, powerful solitary mood, swelling strings and wind audio.

9. Bioluminescence

Underwater wide shot of a deep sea cave lit only by bioluminescent jellyfish and
glowing algae on the rock walls, pulsing blue-green light, a diver drifting slowly
through the beam, gentle floating camera, alien serene mood, muffled underwater
ambience audio.

10. Dappled light

Medium shot of a girl reading on a park bench under a plane tree, dappled sunlight
shifting across the pages and her dress as leaves sway, soft warm afternoon light,
slow push-in, cozy summery mood, rustling leaves and distant children audio.

Where Lighting Prompts Go Wrong

  1. Two key lights in one prompt. “Warm key light and cool key light and neon fill” produces flat mush. Pick one dominant source; demote the rest to accents (“neon reflections on the wet ground” is an accent, not a key).
  2. More than two color temperatures. Warm key + cool accent is a deliberate look. Add a third temperature and the model averages them into gray.
  3. Light that contradicts the clock. “Midnight scene” plus “golden hour lighting” — the model picks one and the frame drifts. Match the light to the stated time of day.
  4. Adjectives without direction. “Dramatic lighting” is a mood word, not an instruction. Source + direction + temperature turns it into one.

FAQ

What does “cinematic lighting” actually do in a prompt? Very little on its own — a generic mood hint each model interprets differently, often as “some contrast, maybe a rim light.” Replace it with a glossary term and the frame becomes predictable.

Which AI video models respond best to lighting vocabulary? Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0, Seedance 2.5, Hailuo 3, Wan 3.0 and Runway all respond to named lighting terms. Models with strong image priors — Seedance 2.5 and Hailuo 3 especially — reward precise terms most visibly.

Warm or cool: how do I choose? Match the emotion first. Warm (golden hour, candlelight, firelight) reads as nostalgia, intimacy, comfort. Cool (blue hour, moonlight, neon) reads as tension, melancholy, technology. Decide the mood, and the light follows.

Can I combine lighting terms? Yes — one key plus one accent: “single key light noir with a faint neon fill” is a classic. Stop at two sources and say which one dominates.

Do lighting words work in image-to-video? Yes, but the reference image already carries a light direction. Use lighting terms to intensify or shift it (“add warm rim light from the right”) — fighting the reference’s light makes the subject flicker.
